Semaglutide (Wegovy, Ozempic) is prescribed by medical weight loss clinics, primary care doctors and endocrinologists across Illinois. Most providers on our list are in the Chicago area, with small groups in the Metro East and Carbondale–Marion. Our list includes only providers whose own website or Google listing names semaglutide.

What it is

Semaglutide is a prescription GLP-1 medicine. It works like a natural hormone that helps you feel full and eat less. It comes under two brand names, both made by Novo Nordisk:

  • Wegovy is approved for weight loss and keeping weight off. It comes as a once-weekly shot or a once-daily pill. The shot is also approved to lower the risk of heart attack and stroke in adults with heart disease and excess weight, and to treat a type of fatty liver disease called MASH [1].
  • Ozempic is a once-weekly shot for adults with type 2 diabetes [3].

You start on a low dose and step up over several weeks. This helps limit side effects like nausea. Wegovy's label has a boxed warning about thyroid tumors seen in animal studies [1].

Who it's for

Wegovy is for adults with obesity, or with overweight plus at least one weight-related health problem, such as high blood pressure. The shot is also approved for children 12 and older with obesity. The pill is for adults only [1].

It's meant to be used with a lower-calorie diet and more physical activity. It isn't a quick fix. Most people stay on it long term to keep the weight off.

Ozempic is for adults with type 2 diabetes. If you have diabetes and excess weight, your doctor will choose between the two based on your health and your coverage.

Semaglutide isn't right for everyone. Tell your provider if you or a family member has had medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2, or if you've had pancreatitis [1]. Don't use it with other GLP-1 medicines.

Cost and coverage

Wegovy's list price is $1,349.02 a month for the pill or the pen [2]. Few people pay that. What you pay depends on your coverage.

Commercial insurance. If your plan covers it, the Wegovy savings card can bring your cost to as little as $25 a month. It pays up to $100 a month [2]. Ozempic has a similar card for covered patients [3]. Some plans exclude weight loss drugs, so check your coverage first.

Self-pay through NovoCare. Wegovy pills cost $149 a month for 1.5 mg, $199 for 4 mg and $299 for 9 mg and 25 mg. Wegovy pens cost $349 a month. New patients pay $199 for their first 2 fills of the starter doses, through December 31, 2026. The 7.2 mg pen is $399 [2].

Medicare. From July 1, 2026, through December 31, 2027, the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge covers Wegovy pen and pill for $50 a month. You need Part D coverage, prior approval and a qualifying body mass index (BMI). If you have type 2 diabetes, you're not eligible for the Bridge, but your Part D plan may cover Ozempic [4].

Medicaid. States must cover these drugs for diabetes but can choose whether to cover them for weight loss [5].

How to choose a provider

Look for real medical care. A good semaglutide provider checks your health history, orders lab work when needed and follows up as your dose goes up. Ask who will manage side effects and how often you'll be seen.

Ask what they prescribe. Ask if they prescribe brand-name Wegovy or Ozempic. Some businesses sell compounded "semaglutide" instead. Compounded drugs are not FDA approved, and FDA has had reports of people hurt by dosing mistakes [6]. The brand-name shortage ended in February 2025, which narrowed the reasons pharmacies could make copies [7]. Our list doesn't include businesses that market compounded GLP-1s.

Ask about costs up front. Ask about visit fees, whether they'll handle prior approval with your insurer and whether they can send a prescription to NovoCare for self-pay.

Confirm the basics yourself. Call to check insurance, new-patient openings and telehealth. We don't verify these.

Frequently asked questions

Is semaglutide the same as Wegovy and Ozempic?

Yes. Semaglutide is the medicine inside both brands. Wegovy is approved for weight loss and comes as a weekly shot or a daily pill. Ozempic is a weekly shot for type 2 diabetes. Doses and approved uses differ, so insurance treats them differently. Your provider picks the brand that fits your health needs and your coverage.

How much does Wegovy cost without insurance?

Through NovoCare, Wegovy pills cost $149 to $299 a month depending on dose. Pens cost $349 a month, and new patients pay $199 for their first 2 fills of the starter doses through December 31, 2026. The list price is $1,349.02 a month, so self-pay is far cheaper. Prices can change, so check NovoCare before you fill.

Does Medicare cover Wegovy?

Yes, for many people, through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge. From July 2026 through December 2027, eligible people with Part D coverage pay $50 a month for Wegovy pen or pill. You need prior approval and a qualifying BMI. People with type 2 diabetes go through their regular Part D plan instead.

Is compounded semaglutide safe?

FDA says compounded semaglutide is not FDA approved, and the agency doesn't check it for safety, quality or effectiveness. FDA has received reports of people hospitalized after dosing errors. With the brand-name shortage over since early 2025, FDA-approved Wegovy and Ozempic are widely available, including at self-pay prices.

Can I get semaglutide through telehealth?

Often, yes. Many providers prescribe semaglutide after a video visit, and some listings show that the practice offers telehealth. Ask how they'll check your health, order labs and follow up as your dose rises. Make sure they prescribe FDA-approved Wegovy or Ozempic.
