In the Chicago area

Our Chicago listings cover the city and its Illinois suburbs: Cook County, DuPage County, Lake County, Will County, Kane County and Kendall County. Most McHenry County providers, such as those in Crystal Lake and Woodstock, are listed under the Rockford area.

The largest share of listings is inside the City of Chicago, where Northwestern Medicine, Rush, UChicago Medicine and UI Health have their main campuses. The rest are spread across the suburbs. In the north suburbs, look at Evanston, Skokie, Park Ridge and Arlington Heights, served by Endeavor Health and Advocate. In the west suburbs, Loyola Medicine in Maywood, UChicago Medicine AdventHealth in Hinsdale and Northwestern Medicine in Winfield are large hubs, with Duly Health and Care offices across DuPage and Will counties. In the south suburbs, Oak Lawn and Orland Park have the most choices.

Ascension also has clinics in the northwest suburbs, and independent specialty groups practice all over the metro. Many large systems have several offices, so you can often see the same practice closer to home.

Medical weight loss clinics in the Chicago area are spread across the city and suburbs, with clusters in Orland Park, Naperville, Schaumburg, Arlington Heights and Oak Lawn. Listings include physician-run clinics, hospital programs and franchise programs with medical staff. We don't list businesses that market compounded GLP-1 drugs.

How to choose a weight loss clinic

A medical weight loss clinic helps you lose weight under the care of a doctor, nurse practitioner or physician assistant. Care usually combines a nutrition and activity plan with regular check-ins, and sometimes prescription medicine such as a GLP-1 drug. Weight loss medicines work better when combined with a lifestyle program, not in place of one [1].

Look for real medical supervision. A good program starts with a full health history, a physical exam and often blood work. A licensed clinician should see you, decide whether medicine is right for you and follow up on side effects. Ask who you'll see at each visit and how often.

Check credentials. Many doctors who focus on weight care are certified by the American Board of Obesity Medicine. You can look up a doctor's certification on the ABOM website [2]. Our listings show the credentials providers report in the federal NPI registry or on their Google profile, but we don't verify board certification or licenses.

Ask how they prescribe GLP-1 medicines. Prescription weight loss medicine is usually for adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related health problem such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes [1]. Ask which medicines the clinic prescribes, whether they use FDA-approved brand-name drugs, how they adjust your dose and what happens if you stop.

Watch for red flags. Be careful with any clinic that:

  • has no doctor, nurse practitioner or physician assistant on staff
  • promises a set amount of weight loss or "guaranteed" results
  • prescribes without reviewing your health history
  • pushes compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide as the same as the brand-name drug

Compounded versions are not reviewed by the FDA for safety, quality or effectiveness, and the FDA has warned companies whose ads made them sound FDA-approved [3]. We don't list businesses that market compounded GLP-1 drugs.

Understand cost and insurance. Ask what the program costs per month and what that includes: visits, lab work and the medicine itself are often billed separately. Some insurance plans cover weight loss medicines and some don't, so call your plan before you start [1]. Our guide to Zepbound insurance coverage explains how coverage and prior authorization work.

Know when not to wait. On a GLP-1 medicine, stomach pain that won't go away, especially pain that spreads to your back, with or without vomiting, can be a sign of a serious problem. Call your doctor right away or get emergency care [4].

Frequently asked questions

What does a medical weight loss clinic do?

A medical weight loss clinic treats weight as a health condition. A doctor, nurse practitioner or physician assistant reviews your health, sets goals and builds a plan that may include nutrition, activity, behavior support and prescription medicine. You'll usually have regular check-ins to track progress and side effects. We include a clinic only when its listing or website names medical staff.

Who qualifies for GLP-1 weight loss medicine?

In general, prescription weight loss medicine is for adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with a weight-related health problem such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes. A clinician decides whether it's safe for you based on your health history, other medicines and goals.

Are compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide safe?

Compounded drugs are made by pharmacies and are not reviewed by the FDA for safety, quality or effectiveness. The FDA has received reports of dosing errors with compounded semaglutide and has warned companies whose ads implied their products were FDA-approved. Ask your clinic whether it prescribes FDA-approved medicines. We don't list businesses that market compounded GLP-1 drugs.

Does insurance cover medical weight loss?

It varies. Some plans cover office visits and lab work but not weight loss medicines. Others cover the medicine only after prior authorization or if you have certain health conditions. Many clinics also offer self-pay programs. Call your insurance plan, then ask the clinic for a full price list before you sign up for any program.

What's the difference between a weight loss clinic and a diet program?

A medical weight loss clinic has licensed clinicians who can examine you, order tests and prescribe medicine. A diet program offers meal plans, coaching or products, but usually no medical care. We list only medical clinics and clinicians, and we leave out gyms, supplement sellers and diet programs without medical staff.
