In the Nashville area

Our Nashville listings cover Middle Tennessee: Davidson County, Rutherford County, Williamson County, Sumner County, Montgomery County, Wilson County, Maury County and Dickson County. That reaches Clarksville to the northwest and Columbia to the south.

Specialist care here runs mainly through a few large health systems: Vanderbilt Health, Ascension Saint Thomas and TriStar, which includes Centennial Heart. Mental Health Cooperative and Centerstone run community mental health centers across the region. Independent groups practice alongside them, such as Heritage Medical Associates for GI care and Midstate Pulmonary for lung care.

Most listings are in Nashville itself, in Davidson County. Murfreesboro, Franklin, Brentwood and Hendersonville have the next-largest groups. Many practices have offices in more than one suburb. If you live in Clarksville, Lebanon, Gallatin or Columbia, check for a local office before driving into the city.

Menopause care here is offered mainly by OB/GYN and women's health practices, including Ascension Saint Thomas, Vanderbilt Health and TriStar groups. Nashville, Murfreesboro and Franklin have the most listings. Look for a Menopause Society Certified badge if you want a clinician with extra menopause training.

How to choose a menopause specialist

A menopause specialist helps you manage the changes of perimenopause and menopause, such as hot flashes, night sweats, poor sleep, mood changes, vaginal dryness, painful sex and bone health. Some are OB/GYNs. Others are family or internal medicine doctors, nurse practitioners or physician assistants with extra training in menopause care.

Decide if your current doctor is enough. Many OB/GYNs and primary care clinicians treat menopause symptoms well. A specialist can help if your symptoms are hard to control, your doctor isn't comfortable prescribing hormone therapy, you have health conditions that make treatment choices harder, or menopause started early.

Look for the MSCP credential. The Menopause Society offers the Menopause Society Certified Practitioner (MSCP) credential. Clinicians earn it by passing an exam, and it must be renewed every 3 years. Any licensed health care professional can take the exam, so an MSCP may be a doctor, nurse practitioner, physician assistant or other clinician. The Society's free search tool shows which clinicians hold it [1]. In our listings, an MSCP badge appears only when a public page we found says so. We don't verify credentials ourselves.

Ask about hormone therapy. Hormone therapy is the most effective treatment for hot flashes. Its benefits are usually greatest when it's started before age 60 or within 10 years of menopause. If you still have a uterus, you need a progestogen along with estrogen to protect the lining of the uterus [2]. Ask whether the clinician offers FDA-approved hormone therapy, non-hormone options and vaginal treatments, and how they weigh your personal risks. Our menopause guide covers the main treatment choices.

Be careful with "hormone clinics." Some clinics focus on custom-mixed (compounded) "bioidentical" hormones, pellets or blood tests to "balance" hormones. Ask what they prescribe and why, and whether it's FDA-approved.

Confirm insurance and cost. Some menopause clinics are self-pay only, so ask before you book. Medicare Part B covers medically necessary visits; you typically pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount after your deductible [4]. Ask whether telehealth visits are available. Many menopause follow-ups can be done by video.

Know when not to wait. Any vaginal bleeding after menopause is not normal. Contact your doctor right away, even if it's light [3]. If bleeding is heavy or you feel faint, call 911.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Menopause Society Certified Practitioner (MSCP)?

An MSCP is a licensed clinician who has passed The Menopause Society's competency exam on menopause care. The credential lasts 3 years and must be renewed. It's open to any licensed health care professional, including doctors, nurse practitioners and physician assistants. You can search for MSCPs on The Menopause Society's website. We show an MSCP badge only when a public page says so.

Should I see an OB/GYN or a menopause specialist?

Start with your OB/GYN or primary care clinician. Many treat menopause symptoms, including with hormone therapy. Consider a menopause specialist if your symptoms aren't improving, your doctor won't discuss hormone therapy, you have a history of cancer, blood clots or heart disease, or your periods stopped before age 40.

Is hormone therapy safe?

For most healthy women under 60, or within 10 years of menopause, the benefits of hormone therapy for bothersome hot flashes usually outweigh the risks. It isn't right for everyone. Risks depend on your age, health history and the type of therapy. Women with a uterus need a progestogen with estrogen. A clinician can help you weigh your choices.

Does insurance cover menopause care?

Most health plans and Medicare Part B cover visits with an OB/GYN, primary care doctor or other clinician for menopause symptoms. Prescription coverage for hormone therapy depends on your drug plan. Some specialty menopause clinics don't take insurance and charge a monthly or per-visit fee, so ask about cost before your first appointment.

Can I see a menopause specialist by telehealth?

Often, yes. Many menopause clinicians offer video visits, especially for follow-ups and adjusting treatment. The clinician usually needs to be licensed in the state where you are. Your first visit may need to be in person if you need an exam, blood pressure check or screening tests. Ask the practice before you book.
